Dear B,

Through this essay, you have managed to put the show into a completely different perspective than your classmates have provided :). I appreciate that you went in deep and not simple analyzed the show step by step according to some of our aspects, but actually had a clear thesis statement to uphold, backing your observations and arguments up with aspects of analysis. The observations on the shots in the breakdown scene were the most vivid example of this. Well chosen. The analysis of Beth’s character was put into perspective (feminism, sexism, crediting men…), which made a lot of sense and is more memorable than a list of facts. Your opinions are circumspect and well founded, I respect your honest and self-critical approach. The structure of the essay and your style are amazing. All in all, this is a complex topic, discussed in a most mature way, and is incredibly entertaining to read as well. Congratulations,

Zsuzsi

P.S.: you will notice some small corrections. If you have any comments about them, feel free to write 🙂

Dear C,

This was truly an amazing piece of work! The analysis of every aspect was researched, logically presented, underpinned by examples and nicely rounded off with your personal experiences and opinions. I have always loved this show, but your analysis made it clear why, which is THE PURPOSE of a critical analysis!!! The task was interpreted and executed perfectly! The order of topics was logical so evry section prepared the grounds for the next. Your voice was calm and confident, but the narration style was chosen so well, as not to distract ones thoughts from the scenes they were enjoying. The scenes were mostly chosen well, maybe sometimes I noticed that the clips were a bit late or early compared to the narration, but it was not bothersome. The introduction was fabulous! The theme song was a wise choice 🙂 All in all we saw (and enjoyed) a well rounded, logical and quality analysis from you.

Thank you.

Zsuzsi

Dear D,

Thank you for all the amazing work you put into this presntation! Had it been five separate analyses of five films, you would have scored 100%. Your 88% is not bad either :), I am just writing this critique down for your possible future benefit 🙂 You analyzed 5 movies from point of view of content, visuals, sounds (music), and you also analysed the character archs through these aspects. This was probably more work than anybody else did in class! and it was professionally done. Your slides were perfect!, with just enough info to help us follow, but not as much as to distract us from what you had to say. The design was great too. The analysis of colour was my personal favourite and this is where the criticism comes in: if you had chosen just this one theme, and followed it through the 5 films, it would have been more organized and would have been more than enough content. I saw that you organized your slides around just a few topics, which is great, but in reality you talked about more then 10 different aspects (characters, plots, messages, colours, other visuals, music, drama, background stories, etc.) In the end I asked you a couple of questions to make you say out loud the themes that you believe connected all five films, and those were answered nicely. What I think you can develop in the future, is settling for 1-2-3 key aspects to analyse and sticking to them, using them to link your films. This will give your future presentations a nice solid frame, that will be easier for you and the audience to follow (plus a preview in the peginning, of what your main points/aspects will be will aslo support this). Now don’t think I wasn’t amazed by all the research you did and all the genuinely wonderful connections you made. That was all appreciated :). All in all you have worked so much more than I expected, and if you narrow your focus even more your technique will be perfect. (Next time a teacher tells you to watch 5 films, be sure to tell them that just one film can contain more themes than an entire series…that was my mistake…sorry.) Amazing job D!!!
